If there’s one thing I love about late summer/early fall in Israel, it’s the perfect temperature of the Mediterranean Sea.
I’m a big fan of everything water related – swimming, supping, kayaking, even just jumping the waves. But if there’s one thing I dislike about water sports, it’s that goosebumpy, shiver-y feeling I get when I spend too much time in cold water.
During the months of September and October, the Mediterranean Sea is a simply delightful place to dip. That’s why I try to get to the beach as much as possible during these last warm months of the year. We like to take the opportunity to soak up the summer spirit before the cold weather hits and rain starts to fall.
Luckily for us, there are plenty of beautiful beaches to choose from along the fabulous Israeli coast. And for those of us who prefer a little bit of hiking in our summer adventures, there are lots of coastal trails that lead to these beautiful beaches.

A walk along a coastal trail at this time of the year means a chance to see the famous white coastal lilies in full bloom. There are beautiful birds and other animals to discover, particularly alongside streams that lead to the beach. And it’s always nice to work up a sweat before taking a refreshing dip in the water.
Here are five fabulous trails where you can make footprints in the sand on your way to one final reunion with the deep blue sea:
Nahal Poleg and Poleg Beach Trail
This gorgeous coastal hike combines the best of both worlds: a peaceful walk along a meandering stream followed by a stunning stretch of pristine beach. The trail follows Nahal Poleg as it winds through protected wetlands before emptying into the Mediterranean.
What makes this trail special is the incredible bird watching opportunities along the stream. Bring your binoculars and keep an eye out for herons, kingfishers, and other waterfowl that call these wetlands home. The white sand dunes and blooming coastal vegetation create a picture-perfect setting for your late summer adventure.

The trail is about 4 kilometers round trip. Midway through, reward yourself with a swim at the beautiful Poleg Beach. Read the full post with maps here.
Apollonia: Seaside Beauty and a Crusader Fortress
Who says you can’t combine history with your beach day? At Apollonia National Park, you’ll explore the ruins of an ancient Crusader fortress perched dramatically on coastal cliffs overlooking the Mediterranean.
My family loves climbing through the ancient stone passageways and imagining what life was like for the Crusader knights who once called this fortress home. The archaeological site is fascinating, but the real star of the show is the breathtaking coastline that stretches out before you.

After exploring the ruins, head down to the secluded beach below. It’s the perfect spot for a picnic with a view.
The trail through the park is less than 1 kilometer, but plan to spend several hours exploring. This is a National Park, so make sure to reserve your spot on the Parks website before you go. Read the full post with maps here.
Dor HaBonim Beach Trail
If you’re looking for the most spectacular sunset hike in Israel, look no further than the Dor HaBonim Beach Trail. This incredible coastal path winds along dramatic cliffs that jut out into the Mediterranean, offering jaw-dropping views at every turn.

Time your visit for late afternoon so you can experience the magic of golden hour light painting the limestone cliffs. Bring a picnic dinner and claim your spot on one of the flat rocks overlooking the crashing waves. The sunset views here are simply unforgettable.

The trail is 3.5 kilometers each way along the clifftop path. Don’t forget your camera – this is one of those hikes where every angle deserves a photo. Read the full post with maps here.
The Sorek Estuary at Palmahim
For families looking for a gentle coastal adventure, the Sorek Estuary offers the perfect combination of easy walking and incredible natural beauty. This trail follows the Sorek Stream as it meanders through protected wetlands before reaching the sea at Palmahim Beach.
What I love most about this hike is the incredible diversity of landscapes you’ll experience in just a few kilometers. You’ll walk through riverside forests, cross over the stream, and explore dramatic coastal cliffs dotted with ancient caves.

The kids always love searching for colorful seashells along the rocky shoreline. Make sure to explore the pools at the base of the cliffs – they’re teeming with fascinating marine life.
The circular trail is about 3 kilometers long. Read the full post with maps here.
Hof HaSharon Reserve
Just north of Herzliya lies what I can only describe as an enchanting hideaway of natural beauty. The first time we visited Hof HaSharon Reserve (in springtime), we were completely blown away – not just by the impressive Mediterranean views, but by the incredible array of flowers lining the entire path and the assortment of butterflies flitting between the blossoms like something out of a fairy tale.
The 3-kilometer loop combines everything you could want in a coastal escape: craggy cliffs overlooking aquamarine seas, greenery, and that rare commodity in Israel – genuine peace and quiet. It’s hard to beat the magic of sand cliff beaches where the only sounds are waves and butterfly wings.

What makes this trail perfect for families is how completely kid-friendly it is. It’s short enough that little legs won’t get tired, easy enough for everyone to manage, and there’s so much to see and do along the way. The reserve feels like nature’s own playground – a true escape from the noise of everyday life into pure coastal tranquility.
Just note that dogs aren’t allowed at this particular reserve, so leave your furry friends at home. Read the full post with maps here.
