The Cliffs of Arbel – Hike Through History

We poured chamomile tea from our thermos and sat there watching the cows: large, lumbering animals performing uncharacteristic feats of grace as they scaled jagged rocks to graze on the side of the cliff.

Got home from an early morning swim to find them already at it.

Every plant in this yard has a story.

We placed each one with our own hands — from the plane tree whose roots eventually broke our patio (we rebuilt the patio; the tree stays) to the lavender I planted everywhere so I can tear off a sprig and press it to my nose whenever I walk past.
The hydrangeas took years of failed attempts before we found the one shady corner where they finally took. Now my husband gives them extra water every day.

Am I a weirdly attached tree hugger, or is this normal?
Biked just outside of Adulam Forest this morning - pine trees, grain fields, grape vines, and ruins sitting in the hills like they've always been there and always will be.

It brought me back to February, when we took my husband's grandfather out there for his 97th birthday. He survived things I am still trying to find words for. And there he was, eating birthday cake in the Judean Hills in the sunshine, laughing.

I've been trying to write about him for two years.
Wild mint, straight from the stream at Nahal Prat. The whole canyon smelled like it on Friday - that scent that is sharp, sweet, and invigorating all at once. Combined with cold water, slick limestone, and warm sun, it made me want to stay all day.
I started mentally moving into one of the caves above the stream...
