Spring Beauty at Sunset: Maresha & Adulam

Wednesday, April 20: Explore the “Land of a Thousand Caves” with Hiking the Holyland’s expert guide and storyteller, Ben Zaltzman!  On this moderate hike in the Jerusalem Lowlands, you’ll get to hear the story behind Tel Maresha and Beit Guvrin, where underground caves and tunnels testify to the area’s rich past.  Explore burial caves, underground homes, and more in this ancient town of Biblical significance.  Relive the fight for freedom waged by Jews during the times of Bar Kochva.  This is one national park that is worthwhile to explore with a guide.

Maresha and Beit Guvrin are also areas of great natural beauty in springtime.  Wildflowers bloom in abundance and the nature reserve is filled with rich, green growth.

After hiking a 2 kilometer trail around the site, you’ll follow Ben by car to Tel Adulam, an ancient Biblical town that is absolutely stunning at this time of year.  Watch the sun set over the hills in this special place, away from the crowds.
This hike is mostly flat, but there are stairs up and down at Beit Guvrin.  The additional 2 kilometer walk up to the top of Tel Adulam includes a 100 meter ascent.

The price for this hike does not include admission to the National Park (28 per adult and 14 per child, free for Matmon members).  Families are welcome! Adult tickets (13 and up) are 100 NIS, Child tickets (3-12) are 75 nis.  Under 3 is free!

    Ben Zaltzman

My name is Ben Zaltzman, I’m a tour guide and a hiker in Israel who leads people on trails around the country.
I fell in love with nature at a young age.
While exploring the wide open spaces of nature, I came to know that it was the place where I belong.
A question I ask during our journeys is, “What happens to me in nature?”
I found secret hiking trails, discovered magical corners in the country, and have been guiding others through my experiences.
The trips I lead are about nature connection, the power of being in nature, and the changing environment.
I’m an expert at long-distance hikes. I hiked for 6 month along the Pacific Crest Trail in the US, and have gone on lots of other journeys in Israel and abroad.
    Education:
Tour guiding course of the ministry of tourism, birdwatching course (Israeli SPN), educational tours (ministry of education), Storytelling, hunter-gatherers life skills, group dynamics leader, tour educator (on Birthright), Nature cure & connection journey.
