Journey through Nahal Prat: An Oasis in the Desert

Sunday, December 19: Join Hiking the Holyland and expert guide Ben Zaltzman on an adventure through Nahal Prat, one of our favorite nature reserves in all of Israel!

On this 6 kilometer journey near Jerusalem, we’ll be walking in the footsteps of Jeremiah the prophet, as we visit the stream that ran through the valley beneath his hometown of Anatot.  In the canyon, we’ll pass fig trees , wild mint, and dense overgrowth. Birds, fish, and animals are drawn to the fresh water and plentiful food in this oasis.

The Prat Stream has been an important water source in Judea throughout the ages.  Along the way, we’ll hear about the many important Biblical figures that came to the area of Ein Prat, along with great monks, religious figures, and kings.

Dip your feet or take a deep dive into one of the many spring pools along the way. Then, we’ll stop to drink hot tea made from herbs we pick on the trail.

This moderate level trail with minimal ascent includes some navigating up and over rocks through the canyon (but not too much!)

This is a one way trail.  We won’t be rushing through this hike: we’ll begin at 9:00 AM and be back at the trailhead at 2:00PM. Located in Judea and Samaria.  The registration fee includes transportation back to the trailhead at the end of the hike.  The fee does not include admission to the Nature Reserve (free for Matmon members, 15 NIS for seniors, 23 NIS per adult).

Transportation from Jerusalem may be provided upon request, for an extra cost.

Space is limited, so register early! Contact us for special pricing for couples. We reserve the right to cancel at any time for a full refund.

My name is Ben Zaltzman, I’m a tour guide and a hiker in Israel who leads people on trails around the country.
I fell in love with nature at a young age.
While exploring the wide open spaces of nature, I came to know that it was the place where I belong.
A question I ask during our journeys is, “What happens to me in nature?”
I found secret hiking trails, discovered magical corners in the country, and have been guiding others through my experiences.
The trips I lead are about nature connection, the power of being in nature, and the changing environment.
I’m an expert at long-distance hikes. I hiked for 6 month along the Pacific Crest Trail in the US, and have gone on lots of other journeys in Israel and abroad.
    Education:
Tour guiding course of the ministry of tourism, birdwatching course (Israeli SPN), educational tours (ministry of education), Storytelling, hunter-gatherers life skills, group dynamics leader, tour educator (on Birthright), Nature cure & connection journey.

  1. We are interested in going but are beginner hikers and I’m a bit nervous about climbing on rocks. Is there a lot of that on this hike?
    Thank you!
