Israel Trail #53–54: Nahal Tamar to the Small Makhtesh (2 days)
Sunday–Monday, January 31 – February 1: Join Hiking the Holyland and our expert guide for the third overnight trip of our Israel Trail desert season, into the Small Makhtesh, one of the most extraordinary landscapes in Israel. On Sunday we’ll set out from Nahal Tamar and hike deep into the desert to the gate of the Small Makhtesh (route details coming soon). We’ll spend the night at a hotel in the Dimona or Yeruham area, with dinner and breakfast. Monday is the highlight of the trip. We’ll cross the crater floor, with its layers of colored sandstone, and then climb Ma’ale Eli, a steep path with railings, steps and handholds, up to a stunning viewpoint over the whole makhtesh. Good to know
- Distances: Day 1: up to 18 km, with about 665 m up and 700 m down (we’re working on a shorter option). Day 2: about 10 km, ending with the steep climb up Ma’ale Eli.
- For fit, experienced hikers only. This is the hardest trip of the season, with big climbs and descents. The climb up Ma’ale Eli may be difficult for anyone with a fear of heights. Not sure? Ask me before signing up.
- Meeting point: Nahal Tamar night campground, beside the Small Makhtesh entrance road off Road 25, Sunday at 8:00. Rides between the hotel, the trail and your car are included.
- Price: 750 NIS, or included in the Desert Season Pass. Includes guiding and rides to and from the trail. Not included: the hotel (we’re finalizing a group rate, and you book directly) and the minibus from Tel Aviv (extra fee, split among riders).
- Sign up by January 10. The trip goes ahead once 10 people sign up. Full refund until then. After that, you can give your spot to someone else.
The packing list and all the details come by email when you sign up.
